450 meters of thrills: the longest suspension bridge in the Black Forest

The Blackforestline in Todtnau is one of the most impressive attractions in the Black Forest. This suspension rope bridge, which only opened in May 2023, offers visitors a unique experience in the middle of nature. With a length of 450 meters and a height of 120 meters above the ground, it is one of the longest suspension bridges in Germany. It spans the Todtnau waterfall, one of the highest natural waterfalls in Baden-Württemberg, and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding forests and mountains.

Activities on the Blackforestline

The Blackforestline is not only an architectural masterpiece, but also a paradise for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Here are some of the activities you can do at this special place:

  • Crossing the bridge: Walking across the bridge is an experience in itself. The view of the waterfall and the surrounding landscape is spectacular. It takes about 10 minutes to cross, depending on the number of photo stops.
  • Visit to the Todtnau waterfall: The 97-metre-high Todtnau waterfall is located directly under the bridge. A circular path leads from the eastern entrance to the bridge to the foot of the waterfall, where visitors can experience the power of the water up close.
  • Hiking: The surrounding area offers numerous hiking trails, including the “Great Waterfall Circuit”, a 2.4-kilometre route of moderate difficulty. This tour connects the bridge with the waterfall and leads through picturesque forest landscapes.
  • Relaxation and refreshments: After your adventure, the nearby “Brückenheimat” restaurant invites you tostop for refreshments. Here you can enjoy regional specialties.
The Blackforestline is also suitable for families. Dogs are allowed, but should be kept on a lead. There is barrier-free access for wheelchair users and parents with baby carriages at the western entrance.

How to get to the Blackforestline

The Blackforestline is located in idyllic Todtnau in the southern Black Forest and is easily accessible:
  • By car: The drive from Freiburg takes around 40 minutes. There is free parking directly at the western entrance. At weekends, however, it is advisable to arrive early as parking can be limited.
  • By public transport: Bus route 7215 connects Todtnau with Kirchzarten and Freiburg. The nearest bus stop is “Todtnauberg Hangloch”, just a few meters from the entrance.
  • On foot or by bike: The Black Forest offers a well-developed network of paths that also lead hikers and cyclists to the bridge.
