Danube breakthrough

A natural spectacle in the Black Forest

The Danube breakthrough, a remarkable geological formation in the Black Forest, is a striking feature along the course of the Danube, Europe's second longest river, which flows into the Black Sea. This region presents two unique phenomena: Near Tuttlingen, the Danube briefly seeps underground, only to resurface shortly afterwards. Near Beuron, on the other hand, the river makes its way through a narrow valley surrounded by steep cliffs known as the "Danube Gorge".

This natural formation not only offers spectacular views, but is also home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

The Danube Gorge is a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers who want to explore the majestic beauty of this landscape. Boat tours offer the opportunity to experience the gorge and its surroundings from the water.

In addition to its natural beauty, the Danube Gorge is also historically and culturally significant. The town of Rottweil, known for its carnival and well-preserved old town as well as the Rottweil Test Tower, is located close to this natural wonder and is an ideal starting point for excursions in the region.
