St. Trudpert Abbey is situated south of Freiburg in a prominent location in the Münstertal valley.
From the valley side, the Baroque church of St. Trudpert dominates the view, while from the mountain, one can see the extensive abbey complex with its new domed church, built in the last century.
The history of St. Trudpert in the Münstertal valley dates back to the 6th century. Along with the local mountain, the Belchen, it is the defining landmark of the resort town.
Monk Trudpert
The Irish-Scottish monk Trudpert founded a hermitage in the Münstertal valley to convert the still pagan Alemanni. Three years later, on April 26th, according to legend, he was murdered by two servants of his feudal lord, Count Otbert of Alsace.
