The Solfelsen, also known as the “Pelzkappenstein”, is an impressive natural monument in the Hotzenwald, a region in the southern Black Forest. This imposing granite block not only offers visitors an insight into the geological history of the Black Forest, but also breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Geology and formation
With a height of 5.40 meters and a weight of around 230 tons, this massive granite block is an impressive testimony to the forces of nature. Contrary to initial assumptions, the Solfelsen is not an ice-age erratic boulder, but a formation that was created in situ by long-term weathering processes.
The rock consists of Albtal granite and rests on a formation of aplite granite, which illustrates the geological context of the entire group of rocks. This unique constellation offers geologists and nature-loving visitors alike fascinating insights into the geological history of the Black Forest.
Historical significance
The history of the Solfels is closely linked to nature conservation. At the end of the 19th century, the rock was threatened with the fate of being turned into railroad ballast. Fortunately, the merchant P. Streicher from Stein acquired the land in 1895 and prevented the quarrying. The Solfelsen has been registered as a natural monument since 1950 and has been owned by the Bad Säckingen Black Forest Association since 1971.
Ecological features
Remnants of an oak-peel forest have been preserved in the area around the Solfelsen. This historical form of forest use was used for the extraction of tanbark for the tannery. The preservation of this type of forest contributes to biodiversity and offers an insight into traditional forestry methods in the Black Forest.
Viewpoint and hiking destination
The Solfelsen is located at an altitude of 775 meters and offers visitors a spectacular panoramic view. From here, you can see the town of Wehr with Öflingen, the High Rhine Valley and, on a clear day, even the suburbs of Basel and the St. Chrischona broadcasting tower. The view continues over the Swiss and French Jura as far as the Dinkelberg with its characteristic karst phenomena.
Getting there and hiking options
The Solfelsen is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. It is located on several hiking trails, including the Hotzenpfad in the Hotzenwald. The nearest towns are Rickenbach and Bad Säckingen, from where the rock is easy to reach.
To get there, we recommend using public transportation or driving to a nearby hiking parking lot. From there, you can reach the Solfelsen via well-signposted hiking trails.
Rest areas and visitor information
A seating area created by Johann Lauber from Spatzenhof invites you to take a break at the Solfelsen. This is the ideal place for a break and a picnic with a view of the impressive landscape. Visitors should note that the Solfelsen is a protected natural monument. Respect nature and leave no trace.
