Crocus blossom in the Zavelstein nature reserve

A fascinating natural spectacle in the Black Forest

The crocus blossom in Zavelstein is a unique natural event that attracts numerous visitors to the northern Black Forest every year. The “Zavelstein crocus meadows” nature reserve offers an impressive spectacle when millions of wild crocuses transform the meadows into a sea of purple flowers.

The natural spectacle of the crocus blossom
Around the beginning of March, the crocuses awaken from their hibernation and begin to bloom. At first, only the closed deep purple flowers are cautiously visible. But as soon as the spring sun warms the meadows, the flowers open and transform the landscape into a magnificent sea of blossoms.

The wild Zavelstein crocus, scientifically known as “Crocus neglectus”, is a special feature. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, it can only be found in a few locations north of the Alps. The 52.5-hectare nature reserve was established in 1979 to protect this rare plant and the charming meadow landscape around Zavelstein.

Activities around the crocus blossom
Visitors have various opportunities to experience the crocus blossom:

  1. Guided walks: experienced guides offer guided tours where they share interesting facts about the crocuses and their history.
  2. Independent exploration: Two signposted tours make it possible to discover the flowering splendor on your own:
  • Zavelstein crocus tour: an easy 3.8 km walk through the nature reserve.
  • Great crocus tour: A 10.4 km circular route that also takes in the surrounding communities.
  1. Evening walk: A special experience is offered by a walk at dusk, when the crocus flowers glow in the light of the setting sun.
