Freiburg im Breisgau

The southernmost city in Germany

Freiburg im Breisgau, often affectionately referred to as the “Black Forest capital”, is a charming city in the southwest of Germany. With its picturesque old town, impressive cathedral and proximity to the Black Forest, Freiburg offers visitors a unique blend of history, culture and nature.

Sights in the old town
The heart of Freiburg is undoubtedly the well-preserved Old Town. Here, visitors can stroll through narrow cobbled streets and admire the characteristic Bächle - small water channels that have flowed through the city since the Middle Ages. An absolute highlight is Freiburg Minster, an imposing Gothic cathedral from the 13th century that dominates the cityscape.

Other places worth seeing in the old town are:

  • The Münsterplatz with its daily farmers' market
  • The historic department store with its magnificent red façade
  • The old town hall from the 16th century
  • Konviktstraße with its numerous stores and cafés

Activities and excursion destinations
Freiburg offers a wide range of activities and excursions:
  • Schlossberg: A trip up the Schlossberg is worthwhile for the magnificent panoramic view over the city. The Schlossbergbahn cable car takes you to the top in comfort.
  • Cycling: Freiburg is known for its excellent network of cycle paths. A tour along the Dreisam or in the surrounding vineyards is particularly recommended.
  • Schauinsland: Freiburg's local mountain is a popular excursion destination for hikers and also offers skiing opportunities in winter.
  • Freiburger Bächle: A walk along the historic water channels is particularly refreshing on hot summer days.
  • Minster market: The daily market around the minster is a paradise for gourmets and offers regional specialties.

Arrival and transportation
Freiburg is easy to reach by public transport. The main train station is centrally located and is the starting point for trains in all directions. Within the city, we recommend using the well-developed streetcar network or cycling.

For those arriving by car, there are various park-and-ride options on the outskirts of the city. From there, you can easily reach the city center by public transport.

Freiburg im Breisgau uniquely combines historical charm with a modern quality of life. The city is known for its commitment to sustainability and renewable energies, which is also reflected in the cityscape. With its location on the edge of the Black Forest, Freiburg also offers ideal conditions for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
