Monastery Hopping

Following the Traces of the Monks in the Monasteries of Alpirsbach, Hirsau and Maulbronn

Information on the Monasteries

The term 'monastery hopping' may sound a bit mundane and 'hip' but, in contrast to the well-known 'island hopping' it is a rather careful and measured way of passing from one monastery to the next. Set against the backdrop of the enchanting Black Forest, the 'Monastery Route of the Northern Black Forest' offers a most diversified and entertaining insight into the world of famous monasteries. Starting in 1095, one of the most magnificent Romanesque monastery complexes was built in Alpirsbach.
In the 11th century the Hirsau Monastery Complex was the centre of the Benedictine reform movement. The Cistercian Monastery of Maulbronn has been included in the UNESCO World-Heritage-List due to its unique state of preservation.
