1. World´s Largest Cuckoo Clock

A contemporary witness to Black Forest craftsmanship

The Black Forest is known for its picturesque landscapes, its traditional culture and, of course, its famous cuckoo clocks. A particular highlight for tourists and clock enthusiasts is the world's largest cuckoo clock in Schonach, which is a fascinating testimony to Black Forest craftsmanship.

The creation of a record
The idea of building an oversized cuckoo clock originated back in the 1940s. However, it was master clockmaker Josef Dold who put this plan into practice in Schonach. After five years of construction, the world's first largest cuckoo clock was inaugurated in 1994. It is the size of a small Black Forest cottage and houses a huge, handmade wooden clockwork inside.

Impressive dimensions
The dimensions of the Schonach cuckoo clock are truly impressive:

  • The clockwork measures 3.30 meters in height.
  • The cuckoo appears every full and half hour
  • The entire clockwork weighs several tons

These dimensions have earned the clock an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the “1st largest cuckoo clock in the world”.

A unique visitor experience
Visitors not only have the opportunity to marvel at the cuckoo clock from the outside, but also to explore its interior. This offers a fascinating insight into how a cuckoo clock works and allows visitors to experience the precision and craftsmanship at first hand.
